Something very exciting happened last week - our hat delivery was featured on Innocent Smoothie's facebook page! Isn't that ace?!
"Gemma sent us this email before visiting Fruit Towers to hand deliver 2800 hats for the Big Knit: "I love to knit and started knitting the little hats about six years ago, just sending a little parcel in every year. In 2010, after I finished my degree, I opened a stall selling my jewellery and handmade crafts in Oswestry Indoor market and the market is such a big part of the local community that I decided to make it a collection point for the hats! In 2011 I collected 827 hats, in 2012 there were 1160, and this year (with a target of 1500) we made it to 2800! The best thing about it is that so many people get involved, and every year I meet new people who want to contribute - it's really great to offer to deliver the hats in person too, so that everyone knows that their hats arrive safely!" To Gemma and all the Oswestry knitters, on behalf of Age UK and everyone at innocent, thank you for being so brilliant"
It's been a long time in the planning, but last week was the very first Oswestry Makes fibre festival. The first meetings happened well over a year ago, and there were lots of different ideas flying around, so it was very exciting to finally see it happen! There was knitting, sewing, crochet, spinning and all sorts of other crafts, but sadly I missed out on having a proper look around because I was so busy myself!
I ran free drop-in crochet workshops in my stall on both Saturdays, as well as in the library on the Thursday evening, where I taught the basics of how to make a granny square, and it was fantastic to start so many people off on their crochet adventures.
I made sure to photograph every single square, I'm so proud!
I'm already making notes for next year, things that I could do differently (maybe have appointments rather than drop-in sessions, it was rather busy!) and things that I'd like to try, and we're having a meeting soon to hatch some new plans. It's the start of something really very exciting!
I've had a bit of an enforced blog break because my home internet is all kinds of broken, but I am currently having an evening mixing work and pleasure, and using free wifi in my local coffee shop! So I thought I would share some of my makings from the last week...
I was all inspired by these gorgeous colours so I got to crocheting right away!
I made some teeny star flower brooches...
and some large star brooches and my old favourite flowers!
The colours really are splendid andI so enjoyed using them!
On Tuesday I had a very big adventure - along with my gorgeous friend Lowri, I took 2800 hats to Innocent Smoothie HQ, Fruit Towers!
It really is an absolutely splendid place, and we both want to work there when we grow up!
This is us by the "Wall of Love" and the Banana Phone! We were made so welcome and I'm already looking forward to taking next years hats! We will have a massive target for next year, given that we almost doubled our target this year! How exciting!
I really didn't do very well with my reading in September, I only managed to finish two books. I think I've just been so distracted with lots of making that I lost track of the month. But I enjoyed both books so at least I managed quality.
So my September readings were
"Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit" by Jeanette Winterson
"The Language of Flowers" by Vanessa Diffenbaugh
I've already started the "Planet of the Apes" so hopefully I'll do better in October!
