The Big Knit 2013

For the last two years I have hosted a knitting day for the AgeUK and Innocent Smoothie Big Knit campaign, where we knit little hats, make pompoms and drink tea! My stall also serves the purpose of a drop-off point for the hats for local knitters throughout the run-up to the deadline, and in the last two years we've made 1987 hats, raising nearly £500 for the charity. This year our target is 1500 hats, and the knitting day will be Friday 16th August!
The first 100 hats have already been delivered - they are already on display in my stall and they are beautiful!
I'm really looking forward to this years hat day, I'm so proud of what we've already achieved and can't wait to see how we get on this year!

Start Up Britain Bus Tour

On Thursday I joined the Start Up Britain Bus Tour as a business Mentor! I spent lots of time chatting to lovely people about their plans for starting their businesses, it was so exciting!

I can't believe that it is almost three years since I opened my stall, it seems like only yesterday! I really hope that sharing my experiences will inspire some new entrepreneurs!

Being Organised...

A couple of years ago I contributed to an article in Craftseller magazine about Christmas making, and talked about being prepared well in advance. Last year I was taken by surprise by the huge demand for my Robins (they're really very cute but who could have anticipated making seventy in two months?!) so this year I really am starting early! There is a good reason though - I have been invited to speak at a local Women's Institute meeting at the beginning of September, so I have put together a Robin kit that can be made quickly on the evening itself.
This is what we will be making,  a sweet little Robin that can hang in the Christmas Tree!
And these are the kits, complete with all of the fabric, wadding, beads and ribbon required, as well as templates and instructions. I have also arranged with my lovely friend from Siop Cwlwm to make the kits bilingual English and Welsh! It's very exciting, and I'm hoping to do the same with my Yo-Yo brooch kits too!

A bit of a theme...

I've been working away on some new jewellery and birds over the last week, and a theme seems to be emerging - they are all in black and white!

More necklaces in my dot range and the latest birds in my garden range - these ones are based on Pied Wagtails!

I think that they are rather sweet! It's a bit of a change for me to be working without lots of colour, but I think I quite like it!

Finished Frankensocks!

After a couple of very enjoyable knitting sessions I have finished my latest pair of Frankensocks! I think they're quite pretty - I tried to blend the colours a bit and make them jazzy!

So many ends...
Finished Socks! Love them!

New Birds

I've had another busy week of making, and I have some very sweet little birds to share...

They are so cute, and all for sale in my stall now!

New Makes...

A couple of little things that I've made over the last week and forgotten to share!
New Vintage birds with hanging loops so that they can hang around the house!
Very sweet embroidery on this pair!
And a one-off necklace with ovals, circles and a square, in pink, green and white. I think it's rather fancy!
All in my stall now!

Sharing my Sketchbook...

I have always enjoyed looking at photographs of sketchbooks. I love to see how other people use them to record their ideas, regardless of the discipline that they work in. So I thought that maybe I should share some bits and bobs from my sketchbooks and design sheet book to show how I work and how ideas progress...
The first sketches of my idea for my fabric brooches
Work for my square brooches. There are squares in the fabric design, so I picked out the shape, and then the colours for both the plastic and the cotton.
Trying out some colour combinations for my dot jewellery
The development of my dot necklace range, using the seven colours in the palette that I worked with
Sketches of the first batch of necklaces (all sold now!)
As well as my little square sketchbook, I have a landscape A4 book of design sheets. At university, design sheets were one of the things that we had to provide for assessments, and to be honest, I didn't really enjoy making them at the time because they had to be on huge A2 paper which was just too intimidating to work on. So now I have this little book, which is much less scary and I can happily fill a couple of pages with ideas. These pages are colour ideas for my crochet granny stripe blanket, which has been in the making for a while now...
Vintage-style patterns and prints
and vintage pyrex patterns. I like to add in samples of yarn so I can get an idea of how the colours work together. I think it's a pretty handy way to work.
At the moment, I am working on sheets with images of garden birds for my fabric bird range. They are quite lovely so far, I will share soon!
