Readings...June

I managed to find time for quite a bit of reading this month, I've really enjoyed everything I've read too, which has been lovely! I am also happy to have successfully reached the half-way point of my reading challenge having read at least four books per month!
In June I did pretty well with six books...
  • "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak
  • "How to be a Woman" by Caitlin Moran
  • "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" by Paul Torday
  • "Wilderness Tips" by Margaret Atwood
  • "A Long Way Down" by Nick Hornby
  • "The Night Watch" by Sarah Waters
I've started "Betty Blue" by Philippe Djain, but I may be distracted by a new toy that arrived today...A Kindle!!! My hubby won a draw at  a conference and the prize was a Kindle Touch, and since he already has a Kindle he gave me the new one! It's so pretty and I've already decided that my first purchase will be "Just Kids" by Patti Smith!

My Creative Space

Having finished my crochet blanket on Tuesday I decided that I needed something new to occupy my hands, so I've started knitting squares. I think the general purpose of these squares will be yet another blanket, but I'm working on the basis that there's no such thing as too many blankets, and the beauty of this one is that I'm making single coloured squares so it's really portable!
These are the colours I've chosen so far - I'm going for a mixture of bold colours and pastels, I might add in some more colours to use up my stash before I've finished though...
And these are the squares I've done so far, they are 20cms square, and knitted in moss stitch.
I'm still working on my chevron blanket, but that isn't very portable so I'm just working away quietly on that one as the mood takes me. It's pretty close to finished now!

Ta-Dah Tuesday - Blanket Is Finished!

I've just finished edging my blanket! I'm so pleased with it, it's so bright and happy and cheerful!
Here's a close up of the edge - I decided to go with the alternate stripe idea, and I think it's worked pretty well, and then I've just put a shell around the outside just to finish it off.
I love a good "ta-dah" moment so I've joined in with "Ta-Dah Tuesday" over at Faith Hope and Charity Shopping (thanks to Sian Lile Makes for the link!)

Flea Market Finds

I haven't had much time for thrifting this week, but I still have some lovely finds....
I picked up this retro fabric on Tuesday...
And my super fabulous Mother in Law picked up these gorgeous florals for me...
I'm not sure what I'm going to make with it all just yet, I'm waiting for inspiration!

My Creative Space

I've been busy joining my granny square blanket this week! I've joined the first 90 squares now, it's looking really pretty, and it's very cosy to wrap up in as I add more rows!
This was what it looked like on Friday last week...
This was yesterday...
And this is today!
It should be finished today, and when it is I'm going to do a few rows of double crochet around the outside, just to make it a bit bigger - I'm thinking of alternating white with some of the colours from the circles.

Lovely London!

I had a fabulous weekend in London with my lovely friend Lowri! On Sunday we visited the South Bank food Market, and Tate Modern - we had iced tea in the Member's room  and this was our view...

and we went to see the Damien Hirst exhibition, this is the "Hymn" sculpture outside...
On Monday we visited the National Gallery, the Portrait Gallery and the British Museum, and shopped in Covent Garden!
So today has been spent recovering, so far I have had tea and cake, had a mooch around the charity shops and started working on a bag design!

My Creative Space

Last night I finished my 100th granny square! I laid them out so that I could see them all, and moved them around and shuffled them about and I think this will be the final layout! I've already joined the first row, and put the rest of them into neat little stacks so they will be put together in the right order. So I suspect I will be spending most of the next week joining!
I'm sewing them together rather than crocheting, so they will lie flat without a ridge - I'm using the invisible stitch from this fab tutorial - the row I've done is looking lovely. My plan is to join two individual rows of squares (like two scarves) and then join them together, just so that I can keep track of the order I want to put them in!

Busy Making...

I've taken a little break from some of my big projects by making a couple of little things, just trying out some ideas that I'd had. I'm quite pleased with it all, but I've been back to crochet today!
Two up-cycled doily pin cushions - front
 and back
 Doily zip purse
And edging the patchwork that I started on Wednesday, I love the Bee fabric!

My Creative Space

I really wasn't going to start any new projects. I really honestly wasn't. It happened a little bit by accident - I was sorting through my shelf of fabric in my stall yesterday, and came across a bag of quilting squares that had been passed onto me months and months ago, this was lethally combined with having a quiet day due to torrential downpours (is it possible that summer is over already?!) and so I decided to make a patchwork cushion...
This is the front, all nicely sewn together already, and bearing in mind it's only the second time I've attempted patchwork, the joins are all pretty neat, with the exception of a couple that are a teensy bit off centre. The next thing to do is to put a strip around the outside (I have some gorgeous fabric already set aside), and then the back, which will be a big orange and cream printed fabric so that it matches but isn't so fancy that it takes away from the patchwork front. So this will be a big cushion, perfect for sitting on the living room floor.
Aside from that, I finished my 83rd granny square yesterday so I'm really close to being done. It's been a productive week!

Making Update!

Things have been quite hectic in my little world of late, but I'm still quietly working away on four projects. The thing is, they're all quite big projects that are taking time, so there aren't any "ta-da - finished" moments to be had, so I thought I'd share some progress photos!
My chevron blanket is coming on well, it's the perfect rainy day project and there's been quite a few of those lately! I spent Sunday sat on my parent's living room floor watching the Jubilee festivities wrapped up in it as I added seven new rows. It's not a convenient carry around project, but still, it's growing slowly!
This Cath Kidston "Sew" embroidery is a bit more portable, but I have to confess, that once I'd finished the pattern, filling in the white background was a bit boring, and it got put in my basket of "Work in Progress" stuff, where it almost became an "Unfinished Project"...
But I pulled it out last week and it's coming along nicely, I just want to put about another five rows around the edges to make it a bit bigger. I've always planned to make it into a cushion, but I'm not sure if I'm going to sew the back or use fabric - there are pros and cons to both - I think sewn would look better, but am I going to spend another year working on it if I do that?!
I'm also working on a sock, it's a bit of the dreaded second-sock-syndrome again, but I'm getting there slowly. My last project is the granny square blanket that I'm really in love with! I've made so much progress in such a short time with it, and I'm hoping to start putting it together by the end of the week - only twenty-two squares to go!
So hopefully soon I will have some finished projects to share, I'm definitely not starting anything new...

Dot2Dot Festival

Yesterday we took a well deserved day off to go to Dot2Dot festival in Manchester. This is our second year, and it was every bit as good as the first! The best thing about Dot2Dot is that there are a couple of really good head-liners, but mostly there's a bunch of fantastic up and coming bands. Last year was better for head-liners I have to admit (We are Scientists, Darwin Deez, The Joy Formidable, and although he's not my cup of tea, Ed Sheeran was there) but this year was amazing for new finds - firstly was Lucy Rose...
Her songs were beautiful and folky, and I'm already looking forward to listening to her album when it is released!
Secondly were Pearl and the Beard...
They were amazing, really energetic and so talented! We were so blown away that we bought all four of their albums there and then, and when we met them all afterwards they were so sweet and chatted to us for ages!
Today I am having a catch up day - I've just written a short editorial for "I heart SY" which is a local free magazine that are really supportive of the market, next I have an email to send to a new shop that want to stock my work, and I'll be back later with an update of some of my makings!
