It's been another month where I've had to really make an effort to find time to read, which in some ways is very good - my stall has been busy and I've been inspired to make some pretty blankets to keep me cosy as the days get more and more chilly, but I really don't like the feeling of not having enough time to read. I usually manage a few pages in the evenings before I go to sleep, but I've been so tired that I've been asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow!
So my readings for September were...

  • "Fragile Things" by Neil Gaiman
  • "Lawless" by Matt Bondurant
  • "Under Milk Wood" by Dylan Thomas
  • "Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life" by Bryan Lee O'Malley
I'm up to fifty-five books so far this year - so I have already passed my target of fifty two (a book a week) books for 2012, and I'm really pleased. I wonder how many I will have finished before the end of the year?!

I had a little bit of time for thrifty shopping this week in amongst all of the crazy backwards and forwards that  seemed to be going on! I picked up a beautiful table cloth on Tuesday, which was the focus of My Creative Space post this week, and on the same trip found this beautiful vintage tapestry knitting bag!
It was only £3, and I think it's absolutely delightful. I will be putting a pair of half finished socks in there, as well as my knitted squares which will eventually be a blanket, so that they can all come to Stitch and Bitch and get finished off!
I am joining in with Thrift-a-long over at divajools, do pop over to have a look!

My Creative Space

I picked up a really beautiful vintage embroidered tablecloth on Tuesday - I just loved the colours, and straight away had a very specific plan for it...
This is the corner decoration, repeated on all four corners...
And a close up of floral detail, just because it's so lovely!
Yesterday I cut it all up so that there would be as many birds as possible, and where there were leftover flowers (for example, where they were too widely spread for a bird) I have cut them into circles for brooches, so that none of the beautiful embroidery goes to waste.
This is the first bird to be sewn up - the fabric has quite an open weave so I've made them slightly larger than my usual birds so that the seam can be further in. I'm rather pleased with it, and will be sharing more photographs of the birds and the brooches when they are all finished!

Trying Out Some new Crochet Stuff...

I had a little teeny tiny bit of time to myself on Saturday and decided that it would be jolly to make something pretty from some peachy-pink crochet cotton that I found in my stall. This is the result of my efforts, and I think it's rather nice!
I made a second one on Sunday because I really do quite like it! That was the last time I saw my crochet hook however - I've had quite the hectic week so far, and today was spent busily making some new things for my stall, which I will hopefully be sharing in My Creative Space post tomorrow!

Hat Adventures!

Some photographs of the journey that the hats made yesterday - it was a very long day but very much worth it!
 Arriving at Euston...
And outside AgeUk's office
I will be sharing more photographs from the rest our trip throughout the week, but our delivery to AgeUK is the end of our Big Knit 2012 adventure - 1,160 hats and a very big target for next year! Many thanks to everyone that made it possible, and a huge thank you to Lowri for accompanying me on the epic journey to London and helping me shuffle a rather large bag around!

I had a day out on Monday with my lovely little sister - we went to Chester for a mooch around the Charity and Vintage shops, and got some nice bits and bobs! My sister got a lovely vintage leather handbag and a couple of other little things for herself, and a beautiful vintage brooch for my Christmas present. I had some good finds too...
I picked up this sweet little cassette box, plus two tapes - Nirvana "Incesticide" and a David Bowie best of tape.

I also got a pretty little bowl with roses on it for my spare room, which I am planning to transform into a proper workspace!
And this sweet little plate, which I am going to put up in my kitchen - I thought it was quite charming, particularly as it looks like cross stitch close up!

Monster Making!

I've been busy working away in my stall finishing the Monsters from My Creative Space on Thursday, and I thought would share some photographs!
These are the mini-monsters, they're teeny tiny and perfect for pockets!
And this is a batch of the original large monster design, complete with unique birth certificates!
Yesterday I had a chat with my stall neighbour Eve, who is a graphics printer, and she designed some funky labels for me for my next lot of Monsters - they are on fancy transfer paper and iron onto ribbon! This is my first attempt at ironing one on...
I'm so pleased, I think it turned out quite well, and I'm really looking forward to making more monsters so I can start using them!

My Creative Space

I've been quietly starting to prepare my Christmas stock today - I know it's still early, but I want to be sure that I am really prepared for the busy season! I took the opportunity to head into my stall on a day when the market is closed so I could really concentrate on sewing, and despite my sewing machine being a little temperamental I got a fair bit done!  I am starting my stock-piling with Button Monsters (a favourite amongst my younger customers) in the regular large size and the mini pocket version, which is a perfect Stocking Filler.
Tomorrow I will be stuffing and sewing them up!
I also did some laser cutting, I had an order for some Staffordshire Bull Terrier Magnets, and made some stock to replace sold items, so it really has been quite the productive day!

More Hats...

Here are the last of the hats that I've photographed and bagged up! The hundred on the left (and a couple of the ones on the right) are the ones that arrived on Sunday, and on the right are the ones that I had kept to one side to put pompoms on. I'm going to be working through them this week, so hopefully they will all be pom-pom'd by Monday.
And here they are all bagged up!
I've had a lovely day - first I bagged up the hats, then I packed an order, and then spent the afternoon teaching a friend to knit! It's been delightful, there's been tea and cake and lots of fun!

Top Hats 2012

The hats that have been made this year are amazing, and I've made an effort that every single one is in a photograph (see yesterday's post), but there are some that are particularly fancy that I wanted to share!
I'm always so pleased when I open bags of hats that have been delivered, it's like Christmas looking through them all and seeing how much effort has gone into them - I love seeing all the bright colours and fancy stitches, and the little details that have been added. It's been my absolute pleasure to have organised a knit along for a second year! I had a delivery of 109 hats to my house yesterday, which takes the total for this year up to 1160, so between the two years, we've raised £496.75 for AgeUk, having made 1987 hats!!

I didn't have much time to have a mooch around the charity shops this week, but I did sneak a quick look on Thursday and this is what I picked up...
A very gorgeous yellow floral pillow case which was 39p, nine blank cassettes for my new tape player, which were 20p each, and a very pretty new bag! So when I actually get a second, I will be making awesome mix tapes and something pretty with the pillow case, and possibly having some thrifty time!

Big Knit 2012

Yesterday, with the help of my friends Sam and Martin, I counted, photographed and bagged up 1000 hats for AgeUK and Innocent Smoothie. Our total by the end of the day was 1051, so I'm hoping we'll get a couple more over the next week to make it to 1100 - I'm going on a hat delivery adventure (think Lord of the Rings with Woollens...) on Monday 24th September so I'll be accepting hats until then!
As well as the many many hats, I wanted to share some of the lovely Twitter comments from the last month - amongst others, these came in on the Wednesday after the knitting day on the stall -

And these ones were from yesterday when I posted the total -
I am so proud of what we've achieved, there's been so much work by so many people, it has been amazing, and the best bit is, all of our hard work equates to £262.75 for AgeUK. That makes me so very happy.

Granny Blanket!

I'm on the home stretch with my Granny a Day Blanket - not quite sure what the sudden rush is when I think about the fact that they've been sat in a bag since March, but I'm going with it!
Last night I sat quite happily crocheting away on the living room floor watching episodes of "New Girl" and drinking tea, and I managed to join them all before I went to sleep (although it was a bit of a late night...)
So today I have been sat in my stall quietly working on the edge, watching the world go by, and chatting to customers about crochet, and it's been rather pleasant. I have done two rows of grey and one row of yellow double crochet around the outside so far, not sure how many more to do, or if I should have a scalloped edge, but I'm pretty pleased with how it looks so far, and also very happy that I have a "work in progress/abandoned project" nearly finished!

My Creative Space

It's been a lovely sunny day today, and since they are getting rarer as the seasons are changing, I decided to go for a walk into town to have a wander around the charity shops - amongst other things, I found some very nice yellow floral fabric, which was very exciting indeed, and got my brain ticking about the many and various things that could be done with it. On my arrival at home I raided my fabric stash for similar yellow patterns, and as I was rooting through bags of fabric, I came across the Granny A Day squares that I started in March. I decided that they'd been left in a bag for far too long, and I've started putting them together this afternoon!
It's almost joined now, I'll post some photographs when it's done!

In the Festive Halloween Mood!

I've been busy making some Halloween themed goodies - I love Halloween, not only is it a good fun spooky occasion, it's also my sister's birthday, and I think she's pretty ace too. So in the festive spirit I made bat brooches and a big bat necklace, they are so much fun!
I think the necklace is just fab, it reminds me of the one Lilly Munster wore...
I'm planning on having a making day at home tomorrow - so excited after having such a busy day in the stall today. We passed last year's hat total last week - there are 856 now!!!

Cosy Crochet Days

It's been a rainy old day and so I decided to have a cosy time at home. I finished the book I was reading ("Lawless" by Matt Bondurant) and worked on some crochet squares. They started as a bit of a whimsy - a couple of weeks ago I picked up some lovely orange yarn (the top square) from a charity shop to add to my chevron blanket and had a bit left over, but not enough for a knitted square for the blanket I was already working on. So I ended up making a couple of 10 x 10cm squares while I was just sat watching a film, and now I have thirty of them! I'm trying to use up odds and ends of yarn, mostly leftover from my most recent granny square blanket
I'm enjoying the beginning of Autumn - the air is crisp and slightly chilly, and the leaves are starting to drop - I'm sure there are lots of cosy crochet days ahead!

Sunday, 9 September 2012

I had a great week of thrifting, and found lots of lovely things!
I picked up the tea-cup and saucer on Tuesday from a second-hand furniture shop, and the floral vase on Wednesday from my favourite charity shop which I pass (and regularly frequent) on my way to work. I'm planning to make my spare room into a proper work space over the next few weeks, so there will be a little space made for them...
On Thursday I had a girly shopping day with my charity shop partner-in-crime Vicky, and I found a bag of lovely green yarn which also had a bag of buttons at the bottom, and some very sweet green beads! I was clearly in a green mood...The floral fabric I found yesterday on a very quick mooch around a charity shop I was passing after I finished in the stall. Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet but I thought it was cheerful!
Also on Thursday I found this Patti Smith 12" single, a bargain at £2 from a vintage/retro shop.
And continuing the musical theme, some tapes for my new cassette player...
Lots of good listening!
I'm joining in with "Thrift-a-long" over at Divajools for the first time today - do pop over to see the lovely things she's found this week!
